Protoplasmic Theory of Life

an inaugural address delivered by him in the year 1874, as President of the Microscopical Society of Liverpool. In it he endeavours to prove that the modern views concerning the nature of life were anticipated by the late Dr. John Fletcher, of Edinburgh, in 1835, in his work entitled Rudiments of Physiology. We think, however, that his claim to be the discoverer of the Protoplasmic Theory is as strong as that of Chaucer to be the founder of the Crystal Palace, because he wrote

The effect of citric acid and citrate on protoplasmic droplet of bovine epididymal sperms
For evaluation of citric acid and citrate effects on bovine epididymal protoplasmic droplets, fifty bovine testes were collected in the October 2007 till June 2008 from Urmia slaughterhouse and transported to the laboratory in a cool container filled with 5 °C ice pack. Caudal epididymis was incised and sperm cells were put into Petri dishes containing hams f10 media with 10% fetal calf serum (...

1. Survival of cells without cell proliferation. 2. Cell multiplication without increase in protoplasmic matter, due to the presence of substances stimulating mitosis and the absence of the proper nutritive elements in the culture medium. 3. Proliferation of cells with new formation of protoplasmic matter through utilization of nutritive substances contained in t,he culture medium under conditi...
متن کاملDiffering Rates of Death at Inner and Outer Surfaces of the Protoplasm
When protoplasm dies it becomes completely and irreversibly permeable and this may be used as a criterion of death. On this basis we may say that when 0.2 M formaldehyde plus 0.001 M NaCl is applied to Nitella death arrives sooner at the inner protoplasmic surface than at the outer. If, however, we apply 0.17 M formaldehyde plus 0.01 M KCl death arrives sooner at the outer protoplasmic surface....
متن کاملFrom protoplasmic theory to cellular systems biology: a 150-year reflection.
Present-day cellular systems biology is producing data on an unprecedented scale. This field has generated a renewed interest in the holistic, "system" character of cell structure-and-function. Underlying the data deluge, however, there is a clear and present need for a historical foundation. The origin of the "system" view of the cell dates to the birth of the protoplasm concept. The 150-year ...
متن کاملSystemic cell theory, protoplasmic theory, and their logic of explanation.
THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE recently elaborated by Welch and Clegg (8) for this journal deserves to receive general attention by physiologists and philosophers of science, since the task of these authors is an ambitious one: to deliver a reflection on the interplay of concepts related to either cell or protoplasmic theory. I do not want to add anything to the rich empirical basis referred to by ...
